Electric Leaf Shredder by Craftsman

Craftsman Electric Leaf Shredder

The Craftsman Leaf Eater is essentially a large capacity, 21-inch diameter funnel-shaped hopper with a whirling nylon line cutter at its base (think large string trimmer in a barrel). Designed specifically for leaves, it handles a bushel at a time with a 5.5 amp electric motor. It can reduce 8 bags of wet or dry leaves to one bag in just minutes, reducing disposal problems and turning waste to helpful mulch for use all around the yard.
Various models are intended for use with plastic trash bags or to set over a trash can or similar container. The LE 700 model is portable, with wheels that make it easy to roll it where you need it. The base is easily removed to you can operate it on top of a trashcan for one-step leaf disposal. It is available at hardware stores and home centers nationwide.

Why An Electric Shredder?

For most homeowners, an electric shredder is an ideal choice for quick disposal of fallen leaves. Electric equipment runs cleaner and quieter than gas powered equipment.. As a rule, electric equipment is also usually simpler to service and maintain in good operating condition. Always read and follow manufacturer's recommendations for the proper use, care and storage of any equipment.

Using Shredded Leaves

Every autumn, homeowners, and their municipalities struggle with tons of fallen leaves. Some municipalities charge hefty fees to dispose of them. Avoid this problem by recycling your leaves in your yard. Whole leaves will compact and form an impenetrable mat. However, shredded leaves make an excellent mulch for use all around your yard wherever bare soil is exposed to harsh weather and weed seeds.
Spread them around the base of trees and shrubs to hold moisture and protect tender roots during cold winter months. They are excellent for roses and other landscape plants year round. As the shredded leaves gradually decompose, they enrich the soil with nutrients and moisture absorbing humus. Add any left over shredded leaves to your compost pile if you have one.

Shredder Safety

Craftsman electric leaf shredders are designed for maximum safety and convenience. You can enhance that safety by wearing proper protective gear and following the manufacturer's directions for proper operation, maintenance and storage.
1. Use an extension cord designed for heavy-duty, outdoor use and plug it into a GFI approved plug. Loop the extension cord and the shredder power cord into a loose knot before you plug them together. That way, unexpected tension on either line won't pull them loose.
2. Wear long pants, long sleeves, gloves and safety glasses whenever you are working with the shredder. Even wet leaves can cause a lot of debris to fly up.
3. Keep pets, children and unprotected adults away from your work area until the leaf shredder is turned off.
